Hospice Ethiopia’s website gets a new look!

By | Blog, Volunteer

As we have mentioned, every person has a special talent that could benefit Hospice Ethiopia.  We have partners that help review our finances, partners that help share our story across the world, partners that have raised funds to purchase a new vehicle for us, partners that use their swimming talents to create sponsored swimming events to raise funds.  Recently,  Stephanie came from the US to tour our facility and is now helping update our website!

Our new website includes many new features, such as options to DONATE to our US and UK non-profit partnerships, sign-up for our NEWSLETTER , keep updated on our BLOG post and learn more about our patients in the  PATIENT STORIES section and and most importantly explore HOW YOU CAN HELP within the website. Please browse the new site and contact us today to let us know how your talents may help Hospice Ethiopia!

The Aylsham Party

By | Blog

From our Hospice Ethiopia UK Partners:

The Aylsham Party on Saturday 14th July was a great success, and overall we raised an amazing £1771. Many thanks to everyone who came – for many this won’t be the first time you’ve supported the hospice, so we are extremely grateful for your ongoing support.

As ever the Gentleman Gits played a fantastic set, which had people dancing until late. There were also many fabulous salads and cakes to choose from so no one went hungry.

Our thanks go to the many people who helped out at the event, from washing up in the kitchen, to baking cakes and manning the bar. We couldn’t do it without you all!

Certificate from Ethiopian government

From our Hospice Ethiopia UK Partners:

Hospice Ethiopia UK has received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ethiopian Ministry of Health for its work in “Supporting the planning and implementation of pain and palliative care services in Ethiopia”. This is a great step forward in the Ethiopian Government recognising the importance and relevance of palliative care.
Without our supporters none of this would have happened. Many thanks to all our donors and helpers.

Tim’s sponsored swim

From our Hospice Ethiopia UK Partners

Last year, Tim Morgan raised nearly £3000 last year through a sponsored swim so we’re delighted that he is swimming again in aid of Hospice Ethiopia and this time in shark infested waters…(a lake in Suffolk)!

A car for Hospice Ethiopia

By | Blog

From our Hospice Ethiopia UK Partners:

As many of you will be aware, last year the Diocese of Norwich’s Lent Appeal raised a staggering £40,000 to buy a car for Hospice Ethiopia. Due to various difficulties with importing the car, the purchase took longer than expected but it has finally arrived at Hospice Ethiopia in Addis Ababa!

The car will make a massive difference to the staff and patients of Hospice Ethiopia, allowing more people to receive vital palliative care in their own homes. The total amount the diocese raised was  £44,724, so we have enough money for 4 years running costs too.

Thank you to everyone who donated so generously to the Lent Appeal.

Norfolk town parties for Ethiopia

By | Blog

From our Hospice Ethiopia UK Partners:

A Norfolk town is getting ready to party in aid of a charity in Ethiopia. On Saturday July 14 Aylsham Town Hall will host an all-ticket party to raise much needed funds for Hospice Ethiopia. The event includes a buffet dinner, with many ingredients donated by local farmers and suppliers, as well as dancing to a live rock band and a classical musicale by the North Norfolk Ensemble.

Sue Mumford, a specialist nurse at Priscilla Bacon Lodge, is chair of Hospice Ethiopia UK. Last year the Norfolk-based charity raised over £30,000 for Hospice Ethiopia, while the Norwich Diocese’s Lent Appeal raised over £40,000 to finance a new vehicle to help deliver aid in Addis Ababa. How did Norfolk become so involved in a charity based thousands of miles away?

“Originally it was about Priscilla Bacon Lodge sending out specialists to train Hospice Ethiopia’s staff in palliative care (care of the dying)” says Sue.  “It became clear that the charity desperately needed funding.  It gets no money from the Ethiopian government and grants from other charities were getting increasingly harder to source. Hospice Ethiopia is bringing hope to hundreds of desperate people. But even more important, is has become a centre of excellence in Ethiopia and trains hundreds of people to deliver care – so it’s work is reaching thousands.

“It only needs about £70,000 a year so survive – so every penny we can raise makes a real difference.  But with more funds they can achieve more. For example, the vehicle funded by the Lent Appeal will allow Hospice Ethiopia to care for many more patients in their own homes.”

Events like the Aylsham Party are a vital part of Hospice Ethiopia UK’s fund raising. “It will be a super night, with a fabulous buffet meal, a bar, and lots of entertainment, including a great live band, the Gentleman Gits, who are sure to get everyone up on the dance floor,” says Sue.  “The fact that so many local people help us with donations of food and services is a huge bonus – it means we can keep ticket prices low, attract lots of people and make as much money for Hospice Ethiopia as possible.”

Tickets for the Aylsham Party are just £20, or £15 if bought before June 1. For information contact Clare Glenn on 01263 734853, email info@hospiceethiopia.org.uk or visit www.hospiceethiopia.org.uk.  Tickets are also available from Barnwells in Aylsham market Square.
